A rare tile with a scene from a fable by Aesopus : "the eagle and the crow"

Ref.:
16252

A Delft blue tile. Size: 13 x 13 cm. Thickness 8 mm. The tile shows a crow on the back of a sheep. This is derived from a fable from the famous Greek author Aesopus (ca 620-560 B.C.) "the eagle and the crow", in which a crow observes an eagle grabbing a lamb and carrying it to his nest. The crow tries to imitate the eagle and fails utterly. The lesson: "pride comes before the fall". The tile is in pristine condition without repairs or restorations and was made at the end of the 17th C. Tiles with no corner decoration are relatively rare as well.
